VACANCY

I would love a "VACANCY" sign for the window of our house.

It would remind me of my youth -- many families had signs outside their homes that read "Casa Ortega" or "The Jacobsons" or "Please Curb Your Dog," but the sign outside my home read "VACANCY." There was no need to have an "OPEN" sign, since you were always open, unless you turned on the "NO" in front of the "VACANCY," in which case you were still technically "OPEN," you just didn't want to be bothered. One could argue (and one has) that having a "VACANCY" sign outside your non-motel house would invite too many inquiries from would-be lodgers. To that I say, "That's what the 'NO' is for."

I think you have to get a sign now. but when we come visit, there better be no "no" in front of vacancy. you should decorate your guest room in hotel/motel memorabilia. Pictures and post cards of old hotels and motels. So in a few years Emily and I wanna do the Route 66 tour. You down for the ride?

The vacancy sign comment takes me back many years when my family ran a motel. We would take turns answering the night bell. We lived over the lobby, therefore it was just a short run down to the front door to open it for a weary travler at 3am. When it was my turn to answer the night bell, I always prayed that my Dad had put the "no" in front of the vacancy sign.
